Isabel dos Santos is an Angolan businesswoman who built holdings across telecommunications, banking, diamonds and other sectors in Angola and Portugal, including stakes in the mobile operator Unitel and the Portuguese energy company Galp, becoming widely described in business media as Africa's richest woman during the 2010s. She is the daughter of Jose Eduardo dos Santos, president of Angola from 1979 to 2017, and her business holdings expanded substantially during her father's presidency. In January 2020 the Luanda Leaks investigation, based on a large leak of internal documents, was published detailing her business dealings, and Angolan authorities subsequently froze her assets and pursued criminal proceedings against her on fraud, money laundering and mismanagement allegations, which she has denied; related asset-freeze and investigative proceedings have also been reported in Portugal, and as of this writing no final criminal conviction has been established.
